ho is your first love? What is he or she like? What are his or her interests? Is he or she anything like you or different from you?
My First Love is Jesus. Jesus is my First Love because I am expected, as a follower of Christ, to deny myself so that I can fully experience Jesus. This is one of the reasons how I am able to experience Jesus as my First Love: by denying myself.
My First Love is Jesus.
~”For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.:~Philippians 1:21, NIV~
~”Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”~Matthew 16:24, ESV~
I have to deny myself of my mother. I have to deny myself of my father. I have to deny myself of my step mother, my brother and my two sisters. I must deny all of my family so that I can experience all of the freedom that comes in following Jesus Christ.
I have to deny myself of my friends. I have to deny myself of my best friends. I have to deny myself of my close friends so that I can experience the fullness of God that is found in having a relationship with Jesus Christ.
I have to deny myself of my job. I am not saying that I should not have a job and that having a job is not important, but that God comes first because He is the One who provides for my job needs. This teaches me to rely on the King of kings and Lord of lords as my First Love.
Following Jesus as my First Love can be difficult and has its hardships. I remember when the Lord first told me to deny myself of my relationship with my father when I went to seminary school for the first time. I set boundaries with him so that I could focus on my calling in my life for me to follow Jesus as my First Love. My father did not like the boundaries that I set, but this did not stop me from following after Jesus as my First Love.
Following Jesus as my First Love can be difficult and has its hardships.
Now, I am not saying that one should give up their relationships with their parents. I am saying that the way that everyone follows Jesus looks different because God has a different plan for the lives of His children. Not everyone is going to give up their relationships with their parents because God may not want that person to give up his or her relationships with their parents. The plan of God for every person’s life is so unique in order for His children to not just make following after Jesus a priority: they make Him their First Love.
~”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”~Jeremiah 29:11, NIV~
The plan that God has for your life is so special because He sees you as special and loved in His sight. Will you make Jesus your First Love today?
